| General Information of the Training Course | The scientific programme on December 1st includes lectures
on clinical molecular diagnostics addressed to hereditary colon/breast
cancer, quality control, and pharmacogenetics. The practical course on
December 2nd and 3rd will include 3 topics: 1. Isolation methods for DNA and the impact on its quality, 2. DNA multiplication procedures, 3. Information on DNA quality issues and primer design via the web. |
|
| Scientific topics | Several types of cancer have now been demonstrated to have
a genetic basis, albeit in a subpopulation of those patients. The main
examples with major progress in this field are the breast cancers and
the intestinal cancers. The present status of those fields, e.g. the
genes involved, their functions if known, their prognostic values, as
well as possible treatment considerations will be discussed.
DNA-based diagnostics is on the one hand just a laboratory matter similar to all other procedures, but with on the other hand several pitfalls specific to that part of the laboratory activities. Pre-analytical issues including sample preparation, multiplication and potential contamination, analytical issues and careful interpretation and handling of the results are of much more concern than generally necessary. The chain of such quality issues, including internal and external quality control, will be discussed. Pharmacogenetics is a blooming issue in the scientific literature,
with major progress in the insight in the usefulness of DNA profiling,
as well as sobering thoughts that not all can be predicted based upon
such a profile. These topics will be addressed. |
|
| Practical activities | The main aim of the practical part of the EQUAL training
course in Amsterdam, totalling 12 hours of intense activities in three
subgroups, is to provide the participants with insight in the impact
of the DNA handling on their DNA diagnostics results, to show them various
methods of DNA multiplication (including major equipment options demonstrated
by the main companies in this field) and to teach them how to obtain
useful information via the web. The three subgroups will all perform
the whole programme, but in a circulating manner. After participation in this DNA course the acquired skills of the participants will be assessed by their retesting regular EQUAL samples. |
