General Information of the Training Course The programme will include lectures on clinical molecular diagnostics by Real Time PCR, as well as practical activities in laboratory related to the EQUAL-quant programme. Practical activities will be reserved to participants in the EQUAL-quant programme.
Scientific topics

The introduction of Real Time PCR as an innovative assay to detect cell hosts and to quantify genes has been assuming a great importance in the clinical routine of many laboratories. Example of clinical application in several fields are now available. In particular, Real Time PCR is used in oncology to detect prognostic factors in terms of gene expression, drug targets directly related to gene amplification and single nucleotide mutation, etc. Furthermore, several application for the determination of minimal/micrometastatic disease in several tissue compartments will be discussed.
The formal sessions of the course will address the following topics:

  1. Interpretation of Real Time results and their technical troubles
  2. Methodological approaches for the quantitation of human DNA sequence of multigenes analysis
  3. Potential advantages and limits of their application in the clinical setting: in oncology, surgical oncology, microbiology
  4. Relevance of tissue banking
Practical activities

For EQUAL participants only

The main aim of the EQUAL Training Course in Bari is the revision of the actions of the EQUAL-quant Programme and the discussion of the results of this survey.
8 hours of the Bari EQUAL-quant Training Course will be dedicated to practical workshop.
The methodological skills required to improve analytical performance of the EQUAL-quant Programme will be reviewed during the Course and then tested allowing the participants to perform for the second time the EQUAL-quant Programme.
Comparison of the results after training will be used to judge the efficacy of the Course.
A specifically defined questionnaire will be also distributed to the participants at the end of the Course.
